US Literature Final

Place—Tiger Gym 1
Date—Monday, December 12
Time—8:00-9:30

The Final (20%)

Part 1: Quotes: You will have three quotes to write about.  You will have choices from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” and “Story of an Hour.”  You will choose to write about two quotes from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and then one from the short stories.
In a few sentences you will address the following:
A) Who is speaking in the quote?
B) What is the context of the quote (what was going on when the quote was said)?
C) What is the significance of the quote? (Make sure that this is your main focus in the explanation.)

Part 2: Mini-Essays (50%)
·      You’ll be given 3 excerpts to read that we have not read before.
·      You will need to identify which literary era 2 of the pieces came from.
o   Romantic
o   Transcendentalist
o   Realistic
·      For the 2 pieces that you selected to identify and write a mini essay on you must also annotate those 2 texts.
·      For 2 of the pieces you will write a mini-essay in which you use details and examples from the texts to support your theory of which era the piece fits into.  You will use the rhetorical devices and literary elements to help support your answer.

Part 3: Response to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (30%)
In a short essay you will discuss if Huck Finn is a dynamic character and is able to help Twain establish his purpose.  You will use specific examples from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to support your ideas.
